The protection of the mouth and the prevention of any disease development is a task of great importance. Recently the most frequently occurring dental diseases have been caries and gum disease (periodontitis). According to advanced medical science dental diseases are caused by a certain amount of common factors. Among them the most significant cause is dental plaque. The dental plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria on the surface of the tooth originated by the decaying process of nutriment. It appears as a soft mass which can only be removed by the means of mechanical rubbing. The calcified form of dental plaque is the tartar settling itself under and on the surface of the gums thus contributing to the development of dental diseases.

Dental diseases can be prevented by means of:

1.) adequate oral hygiene

a) mechanical and chemical materials

Removing tartar, mechanical means (toothbrush, toothpaste) and chemical agents (mouth rinsing) are required.

  • small headed toothbrush enabling access to the entire surface of the tooth
  • round-ended plastic bristles
  • hard bristles in case of healthy gums, soft bristles in case of unhealthy gums.
  • electronic/ultrasonic toothbrush is an advantage

The ultrasonic toothbrush applies the same ultrasonic technology that we use at our practice. The main difference between the conventional electronic toothbrush and the ultrasonic toothbrush is the frequency range. The conventional electronic toothbrush has 3000 vibrations per minute while the ultrasonic toothbrush has around 20 000 vibrations per minute. This results in the ultrasonic toothbrush allowing a more thorough cleaning of the tooth and even small amounts of tartar can be removed in the process.

It is similar to the electronic toothbrush however the main difference is that you don’t need to brush your teeth but you only need to slide it along the surface of the teeth.

  • with fluoride (from the age of 3)
  • medical toothpaste in case of gums diseases (anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects)

Brushing method:

  • Fogapolas Mufogsorsmall circular moves
  • from the gums towards the tooth
  • in constant order
  • covering all surface

Brushing frequency:

  • brush thoroughly at least twice a day to remove plaque from the whole surface of your teeth and if possible after each meal.

Additional tooth clearing tools:

  • dental floss
  • interdental brush
  • superfloss

b) removing tartar

Removing tartar or "scaling" is done by mechanical means with the help of an ultrasound depurator.

2.) regular check-up

  • It is worth visiting your dentist at least every 6 months for professional cleanings and dental examinations!

3.) appropriate nutrition

  • limit sweet or starchy food especially between meals
  • favor sweeteners (they do not decay in contact with mouth's bacteria, they do not produce acid thus they do not damage tooth enamel)

4.) use of fluoride

  • internal use (systematically) at the time of teething. Fluoride can be found in: water, salt, milk or tablets
  • external use (local) after the surfacing of teeth by rubbing, rinsing or using fluoride toothpaste

Gum disease

Gum (or periodontal) disease is an inflammation of the gums. The most frequent stage of gum disease is periodontitis, often preceded by gingivitis.

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by dental plaque. Most of the time removing the dental plaque is ensued by total healing. The gingivitis may be acute or chronic. The acute form can be caused by infections such as Herpes virus with additional symptoms such as redness, tumescence, pain, blister or ulcer, possibly fever or tumescence of the lymphatic gland. The chronic gingivitis is often painless; with reddish-blueish tumescence, bleeding gums when the teeth are being brushed. Gingivitis can be cured easily but if it is left untreated it can progress into periodontitis with permanent effects.

Periodontitis is a term used to describe a group of conditions that is caused by the inflammation of the gums and other structures that support the teeth. While trying to eliminate the bacterial infection the body produces substances that cause the gradual destruction of the periodontal ligament and underlying bone. These are the structures that hold the teeth in the jaw. As this condition deteriorates the tooth becomes loose. Pockets form between the tooth and the gum, allowing more bacteria to accumulate. Left untreated, periodontitis can result in tooth loss.

  • the most essential is restoring oral hygiene (scaling plaque or calculus that has accumulated on your tooth)
  • severe periodontitis will require surgical intervention
  • treatment with antibiotics to eliminate bacterial infections
  • treatment with laser: the expected duration of the treatment depends on the severity of periodontitis

Autaclave device

The Autoclave is a sterilizing device which uses over-pressured, saturated steam to kill all germs. After the established cleaning procedures all the reusable equipments are sterilized in the Autoclave. Most equipments is wrapped up before the process to preserve sterility for a longer period. For this purpose we use a special material which allows the steam to penetrate the wrapping resulting in a sterile environment inside.

Raising the number of non-reusable tools

We have also minimized the risks by increasing the number of non-reusable tools besides the sterilizing processes. We pay a great deal of attention to use many non-reusable tools like, rinsing cups, tissues, paper handkerchiefs, protective covers, saliva suction, tray inserts, paper towels, needles, syringes, protective masks, rubber gloves and more.

Agents used for surface cleaning

It is imperative to clean the complete operator unit and other devices before any treatment. The handheld units are cleaned with Denitro tissue while the dental chair is cleaned with the Denitro Mikro spray. We wash the work desk with a material called Indicur. All equipments that requires sterilizing also ends up in a sterilizing bath which contains the agents Haemosol and Rotasept.
